Driveable Cruise Vacations for the Carolinas

It wasn’t long ago when a cruise vacation required a flight (or very long drive) to Miami.  Thanks to a heatlhy and expanding cruise industry, family cruise vacations are now much easier on the wallet due to recent additions of ports on the east coast.

Charleston – Carnival announced in September 2009 that Charleston would become the new home port for the Fantasy.  So far, the decision has proven to be a good one for Carnival and Charleston.  This year the port expects 175,000 passengers from 90 cruises, up from 69 cruises and 111,000 passengers in 2010.  Charleston recently announced a $25 million cruise terminal will be built next year.  This is a much needed improvement that should solidify Charleston as a premier cruise port for the future.  The Fantasy does 5 night Bahamas, 6 night Bermuda, and 6/7 night Eastern Caribbean itineraries out of Charleston.

Baltimore – Baltimore is now a thriving port on the east coast and currently home to the Carnival Pride and Royal Caribbean Enchantment of the Seas.  The Pride does 7 night Bahamas, 7 night Bermuda, and 7 night Eastern Caribbean itineraries.  The Enchantment of the Seas does 5/6/7 night Bermuda, 7/9 night Bahamas, 8 night Canada / New England, 9 night Eastern Caribbean, and 12 night Southern Caribbean.

Norfolk – Norfolk invested $36 million in 2007 to build its cruise terminal and is now host to seasonal sailings on the Carnival Glory.  Norfolk has not seen the passenger demand that Charleston or Baltimore has but is still doing seasonal sailings.  The Glory does 6 night Bahamas itineraries in May and October.
